MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will go for its second victory over the Southeast Missouri Redhawks in 10 days when the two teams square off at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The game is part of a women’s and men’s doubleheader and is also part of “UTM Appreciation Night”. All faculty and staff will receive two free reserved chairback tickets with the swipe of a faculty/staff Skyhawk card and the first 500 students who swipe their Skyhawk card will receive an official UT Martin basketball shirt, courtesy of Russell Athletic brand. Tipoff for the women’s game against Murray State is set for 2 p.m. while the follow at 4 p.m.
The Skyhawks (8-20, 3-10 Ohio Valley Conference) defeated Southeast Missouri by a 79-70 margin in Cape Girardeau on Feb. 12, limiting the OVC’s highest scoring offense nearly 13 points below their season average. Marshun Newell and Myles Taylor scored 18 points apiece to power UT Martin to the victory, as the Skyhawks ended the game on an 18-8 run after trailing by one point at the 5:53 mark. Dee Oldham (13 points) and Mike Liabo (12) also reached double-figures in the scoring column for UT Martin.
Southeast Missouri (14-13, 5-8 OVC) is coming off an 87-70 home triumph over Jacksonville State on Thursday night. The Redhawks connected on 63.6 percent of their shot attempts in the first half and outscored the Gamecocks by a 58-16 margin in the paint on their way to the victory. Tyler Stone scored a game-high 28 points while Nino Johnson compiled a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southeast Missouri, the preseason favorite in the OVC West division.
