BASEBALL ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO WEEKEND SERIES AGAINST EASTERN MICHIGAN
February 20, 2014
MARTIN, Tenn. – Because of poor field conditions, the University of Tennessee at Martin’s home baseball series originally scheduled for this weekend against Eastern Michigan has been moved to E.S. Rose Park on the campus of Belmont University. First pitch times are now scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23.
UT Martin’s home game against Southern Illinois on Tuesday, Feb. 25 is still scheduled to be played at Skyhawk Field, weather permitting.
This weekend marks the first time that the Skyhawks and Eastern Michigan have squared off on the baseball diamond. The neutral series will feature UT Martin as the designated home team on the scoreboard on Friday and Eastern Michigan as the home team on Saturday. The home team for Game 3 of the series will be determined by a pregame coin flip.
The Skyhawks are currently 0-4 on the young season but have either led or been within two runs after seven innings of play in all four contests against UAB and No. 27 Ole Miss.
Offensively, UT Martin has been led by senior first baseman Phil Sorensen’s .286 batting average and .357 slugging percentage while freshman Chase Young has posted a team-best .429 on-base percentage while making back-to-back starts in left field.
The Skyhawks will go with the same starting rotation as last weekend, tabbing junior left-hander Taylor Cox (0-1, 0.00 ERA) to start in Game 1. Junior southpaw Dalton Potts (0-0, 0.00) will get the starting nod on Saturday while junior righty Alex Martin (0-1, 3.60) will likely start in the series finale on Sunday. That trio combined for a microscopic 0.95 ERA in 19 innings of work last weekend at UAB.
A member of the Mid-American Conference, Eastern Michigan is in the midst of its 16-game season-opening road swing, as it will also visit fellow Ohio Valley Conference schools Austin Peay and Morehead State during this stretch.
The Eagles head into the weekend with a 1-2 overall record after an impressive showing at No. 16 Clemson last weekend. Eastern Michigan won the season opener by a 6-5 margin in 10 innings before narrowly falling 5-3 on Saturday and 9-7 on Sunday.
Senior first baseman Lee Longo guided the Eastern Michigan offense at Clemson, hitting .462 with four doubles and three RBI’s while piecing together multi-hit outings in all three contests. A total of six Eagles drove in multiple runs in the three-game set at Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse Clemson.
Eastern Michigan has announced junior right-hander Jake Andrews (0-0, 5.79 ERA) as its probable Game 1 starting pitcher. Senior righty Steve Weber (0-0, 7.71) and freshman right-hander Sterling Sharp (0-1, 10.12) are expected to start in Games 2 and 3, respectively.
