MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to become just the sixth team in the program’s 45 year history to reach 20 wins when Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State comes to town on Saturday, Feb. 22. Saturday’s doubleheader against the Racers will begin at 2 p.m. as part of UT Martin Appreciation Day.
For the seventh time this season, the Skyhawks (19-7, 12-1 OVC) scored in triple figures against Tennessee State 104-65 on Monday evening. With the victory, the Skyhawks clinched at least a tie of the OVC regular-season championship and have earned the No. 1 seed and a double-bye in the upcoming OVC Tournament.
UT Martin placed four players in double figures but the duo of Heather Butler and Ashia Jones combined for 52 points on the evening. Butler scored a game high 27 points, notching her 15th game with 20 points or more this season. Jones notched her first OVC Player of the Week honor, to go with her fourth Freshman of the Week accolade by notching three consecutive 20 point outings, tallying 25 points and seven rebounds.
Katie Schubert continued her hot streak, scoring 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Jasmine Newsome joined in the action by notching her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points, 11 assists and seven steals.
Murray State (10-15, 3-10 OVC) kept their tournament hopes alive with a 66-55 victory over Southeast Missouri on Wednesday night. The Racers placed three scorers in double figures, led by the play of Taylor Porter who tossed in 25 points. Porter was joined by Jessica Winfrey who tallied a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds while Janssen Starks rounded out the trio with 11 points.
UT Martin leads the all-time series between the two schools 42-33, earning victories in eight of the last nine contests. The Skyhawks narrowly won the first matchup, escaping with a one point victory at Murray State, 88-87 on Jan. 4.
