Tournament Game Notes Tournament Central Updated Tournament Schedule
MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will travel to Oxford, Miss. for its third non-conference tournament of the season at the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic starting on Friday, Feb. 21 before capping off play on Sunday, Feb. 23.
The Skyhawks (3-4-1) will kick off the tournament against Buffalo on Friday, Feb. 21 at 3:45 p.m. They will open action on Saturday against Northern Colorado at 9 a.m. before facing off against familiar foe Saint Louis at 11:15 a.m. The Skyhawks will round out the tournament field on Sunday when they play Bowling Green, a team which the Skyhawks pushed to a 6-6 tie last weekend, at 11:15 a.m. before meeting Southeastern Conference host Ole Miss at 3:45 p.m.
UT Martin had a successful tournament at the Georgia State Panther Invitational last weekend, finishing with a record of 2-1-1. The Skyhawks knocked off host Georgia State 9-7 before picking up another victory over Big 10 foe Indiana 7-1. The following day began with the Skyhawks picking up a 6-6 tie against Bowling Green before falling to Atlantic Coast power Georgia Tech 8-5.
Offensively, the Skyhawks are led by Deven Wilson who has posted an impressive .400 batting average while tallying five doubles and driving in five RBIs through the first eight games. Junior Lauren Smith leads the Skyhawks with three home runs and eight RBIs while classmate Kenzi Tate has tallied a pair of home runs and four RBIs to rank among the team’s leaders. The freshmen trio of Gabby Glenn, Taylor Manning and Renate Meckl have quickly adjusted to their roles within the team, combining to hit .329 with eight hits each, four doubles, two home runs and 15 RBIs.
In the circle, the Skyhawks will look to Tate who leads the team with a 2-1 record, 3.34 ERA, two complete games and 19 strikeouts on the season. Tate is joined by junior lefty Casey Vincent who has posted a 0-2 record to go with a 5.73 ERA in 14.2 innings of work. Freshman Elizabeth Wiegand leads the team with 16.2 innings of work and a record of 1-0 while posting an ERA of 5.88 on the season.
