SKYHAWK WOMEN SET TO TRAVEL TO SIUE FOR PINK ZONE MATCHUP

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to continue its winning ways with an Ohio Valley Conference road matchup at SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tipoff from the Vadalabene Center is schedule for 4 p.m. as both teams join in the Pink Zone to help create awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research.
The Skyhawks (17-6, 10-0) are off to their best start in the program’s conference history, winning their first 10 games and holding an overall .739 winning percentage. The league’s leading scoring offense tallied 87 points against Eastern Kentucky, the most points allowed by the Lady Colonels on the season.
Offensively the night belonged to senior guard Heather Butler who tied the Skyhawks program record with 44 points on 12-of-19 shooting from the floor and 14-of-15 from the free throw stripe. Two other Skyhawks scored in double figures as Jasmine Newsome tossed in 16 points and six assists while Ashia Jones tallied 12 points to go along with five rebounds and two blocks in just 24 minutes of play.
SIUE (6-17, 2-8 OVC) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 59-54 victory over NJIT on Monday evening. Two players scored in double figures for the Cougars, led by the play of freshman Micah Jones who tallied 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Ashley Capotosto tallied 10 points for the Cougars to round out the team’s double-digit scorers.
The Skyhawks own an 8-5 advantage in series history, winning the most recent matchup on Jan. 25 in Martin 111-72. The team’s 111 points ranked as the second highest in program history and the most ever scored at home. Six players scored in double figures, led by the play of the freshman tandem of Jones and Elizabeth Masengil who combined for 36 points.
