MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will face an unfriendly foe when they resume its homestand with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference West foe SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Jan. 25. Tipoff between the Skyhawks and Cougars is schedule for 2 p.m. in game one of a doubleheader.
The Skyhawks (14-6, 7-0) have won seven straight games, racing out to the best start in the program’s OVC-era with a perfect slate. Monday saw the Skyhawks knock off Tennessee Tech 102-78, tying the highest single game output of the season. Seven Skyhawks scored on the night, but it was the play of Jasmine Newsome, Heather Butler and Ashia Jones who left the fans wanting more.
Newsome scored a game high 36 points along with seven assists, six rebounds and four steals while Butler tallied 35 points, tying a career best with seven three-pointers made. Freshman Ashia Jones scored 19 points in her return to the lineup. The trio combined to score 90 points for the Skyhawks, including a 28 minute span in which the trifecta scored 76 straight points of the team’s triple-digit output.
SIU Edwardsville (5-14, 2-5 OVC) comes into the weekend’s action fresh of a 77-67 setback to Austin Peay. Leading scorer Tierny Austin led the Cougars 21 points and 11 rebounds. Austin was joined in double figures by Jessie Wendt and Raven Warford with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Skyhawks own a 7-5 advantage in series history, but SIUE won both matchups last season, giving the Skyhawks two of their five conference losses on the year. The Cougars won both games by a total of four points last season, including a one-point overtime victory on Jan. 26.
