MEN'S HOOPS CLOSES OUT BRIEF HOMESTAND WITH MATCHUP AGAINST OVC RIVAL TENNESSEE STATE

MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team will go for its first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the season against the Tennessee State Tigers on Monday, Jan. 13 at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m., following the introductory press conference for new Skyhawk athletics director Julio Freire (3 p.m.) and a women’s basketball game against Southeast Missouri (5:30 p.m.).
The Skyhawks have faced arguably the toughest OVC schedule so far in 2013-14, as their four conference opponents have combined to go 12-4 in the early stages of conference play.
UT Martin (5-14, 0-4 OVC) fell 87-72 to defending OVC champion Belmont on Saturday night. Mike Liabo paced the Skyhawks with 20 points while Marshun Newell recorded a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Dee Oldham and Terence Smith also scored 15 points for UT Martin.
Tennessee State (2-16, 1-3 OVC) is coming off a 102-94 loss at Southeast Missouri on Saturday - the ninth single-digit loss for the Tigers this season. OVC scoring leader Patrick Miller poured in a career-best 37 points for Tennessee State but Southeast Missouri shot 65.3 percent (32-for-49) for the game. Jacquan Nobles added 23 points while MJ Rhett had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers.
