MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball responded well to its first home game in 11 outings by knocking off Ohio Valley Conference foe Belmont on Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks must now turn their focus to West division rival Southeast Missouri when they invade the town on Monday, Jan. 13. Tip-off from the Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (11-6, 4-0 OVC) are just the first team in program history to start out conference play with a 4-0 mark, picking up wins over Jacksonville State, Murray State, Austin Peay and Belmont. In the win over Belmont, the Skyhawks placed three players in double figures while distributing the ball effectively with 21 assists and 35 field goals.
Heather Butler led the way for the Skyhawks with a game-high 22 points while chipping in seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Butler was joined in double figures by reigning OVC Freshman of the Week Ashia Jones who tallied 17 points while Katie Schubert notched 11 points.
Southeast Missouri (5-11, 1-2 OVC) enters the game fresh off a 75-67 setback against Tennessee State on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Redhawks placed three players in double figures, led by the play of Jordan Hunter who tallied 18 points and four assists. Olivia Hackman added 16 points while Connor King finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
Monday’s matchup will be the 56th meeting in series history with Southeast Missouri holding the slim 29-27 advantage. The Skyhawks have owned the Redhawks in recent history, winning eight consecutive matchups.
