MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team is set to do something which has been done just three times in program history when it travels to Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay on Monday, Jan. 6. Tip-off from the Dunn Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (9-6, 2-0 OVC) could become just the fourth team in program history to start the OVC schedule with a 3-0 record, pending a victory over the Lady Govs. Fresh of a highly contested 88-87 victory at Murray State, the Skyhawks will look to continue their potent scoring offense which averages 88 points per game in conference play. Against Murray State, the Skyhawks had three players score 20 points or more for the first time since March, 2012.
Heather Butler led the trio in scoring, tallying 33 points while climbing the OVC career scoring leaderboard. Butler returns to the venue in which she scored her 2,000th career point, ranking third on the OVC scoring list with 2,431 points and trailing the all-time record by just 94. Butler was joined by Jasmine Newsome and freshman Ashia Jones who tallied 24 and 20 points, respectively.
Austin Peay (3-10, 0-1 OVC) carries an eight-game losing streak into Monday’s matchup. Sophomore Tiasha Gray leads the Lady Govs in scoring (14.7 ppg) and assists (5.0 apg), while pacing the team in scoring seven times this season. Gray is joined in double figures by Kristen Stainback who averages 10.6 points per game.
This marks the 77th matchup between the two programs with Austin Peay holding the series advantage, 43-33. Despite trailing in the series, the Skyhawks have owned the Lady Govs of late, winning four consecutive games and six of the last seven contests. The Lady Govs lone win during the span was a 69-61 home victory on Feb. 3, 2011.
