October 20, 2013
AUBURN, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team held its own at No. 2 Auburn on Saturday but fell 15-5 to the Southeastern Conference powerhouse.
The Skyhawks, competing for the first time since Sept. 29, put the host Tigers to the test right out of the gate, tallying two points in equitation on the flat. Reid Rickett earned MOP accolades after putting together a remarkable 95-point ride, while Mykaela Van Selus was also responsible for a point with a 75-point showing.
In equitation on the flat, Hunter Ralston captured a point with her 75-point ride. UT Martin concluded the Hunterseat portion of the competition trailing by a 7-3 margin.
In Western action, the Skyhawks once again went toe-to-toe with Auburn, tallying two more points. Cora Rogalski (68.5 points) and Laurel Ellzey (69.5) each accounted for points in horsemanship.
However, despite five solid rides in reining, UT Martin could not come up with a point in the final event of the afternoon. Auburn would claim all five points in reining but only won the raw score by 12 points (343 to 331).
The Skyhawks now return home for seven straight competitions. UT Martin is off from official competition for the next two weekends before hosting Southern Methodist (Nov. 8) and Kansas State (Nov. 9).
