All-Mid Major All-American Teams

MARTIN, Tenn. – Just a week after the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball player Jasmine Newsome earned her first preseason accolade, the explosive senior has added yet another honor to her profile. College Sports Madness has tabbed Newsome as the Preseason All-Mid Major Player of the Year for the 2013-14 season.

This accolade comes shortly after the staff at College Sports Madness picked Newsome as the top women’s basketball player from the Ohio Valley Conference. In addition to Player of the Year honors, Newsome was named to the All-Mid Major All-American first team. Teammate Heather Butler was tabbed to the list’s third team.

“It’s a great tribute to Jasmine, our university and program,” said UT Martin head women’s basketball coach Kevin McMillan. “I’m glad for her and her teammates as she is very deserving for this recognition. She’s a leader on and off the court who is a great ambassador for our program. A single quote doesn’t give her justice for what she does.”

A Millington native, Newsome is the reigning two-time OVC Player of the Year and two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year. Newsome, a three-time All-OVC first teamer, averaged 22.6 points per game, ranking fifth in the nation in scoring en route to the program’s first All-American honors. The senior guard is on pace to become just the second player in UT Martin history to score 2,000 points, currently sitting at 1,958 for her career.

Throughout her three year career, Newsome has rewritten the UT Martin record books. Newsome ranks second on the all-time scoring list (1,958 points), most single-season points (770), single-season free throws (167), single-season assists (193) and 508 career assists. She also ranks in the top-10 in 19 statistical categories.

Butler was named to the third team after becoming the program’s first 2,000 point scorer, scoring 2,111 points. Butler’s 22.4 points per game last season ranked sixth in the country in scoring. Along with her volume scoring output, Butler has been consistent, setting a pair of NCAA three-point records by making a three-pointer in 80 consecutive games and 34 games in a single season.

Together, Newsome (22.6, fifth) and Butler (22.4, sixth) ranked as the only tandem to both rank in the nation’s top-10 in scoring. They have helped UT Martin to 63 victories and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances since 2010.

College Sports Madness will also provide complete women’s basketball postseason coverage starting with the conference tournaments.  As the NCAA and other postseason tournaments are announced, College Sports Madness will have in-depth capsules for all of the participating teams. Madness will continue to announce preseason accolades leading up to the release of Madness Preseason All-American team.
