HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team made a move in the final round of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate this morning, earning fourth place accolades with a three-round total of 861 (-3).
The Skyhawks shot a 293 today, finishing as one of four teams under par for the tournament.
Returning less than 30 minutes away from his hometown of Clarksville, Tenn., sophomore Tyler Guy continued his solid season with a final round of 71 to finish in third place with a 210 (-6). Brendon Caballero (215, -1) came in 12th place after a third round score of 72, while Ben Reeves shot a 78 today to finish at 220 (+4). Tyler Shellnut compiled a three-round total of 222 (+6) after a 72 this morning, while Austin Swafford rounded out the scoring with an 81 to finish at 225 overall (+9).
Peyton Deming carded a 74 today to shoot a 220 (+4) for the tournament as an individual. Gavin Shellnut (226, +10) shot a 77 today while John Michael Sisinni (231, +15) fired an 83 this morning.
“Light rain and windy conditions made club selection a premium and then executing the shot was extremely difficult,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Overall, our ball striking was good considering the conditions but our putting was not up to par. We did not make enough birdies to cover our mistakes. However, our players played extremely hard today and I am very pleased with their fourth place finish.
This tournament marked the fifth and final tournament of the fall for the Skyhawks, as UT Martin will open its spring season on Feb. 23-24 at the Frito Lay/All-State Intercollegiate in Philadelphia, Miss., hosted by Jackson State.
“We finished our fall play with finishes of first, second, fourth, fifth and ninth – which are all records for our team,” Carpenter said. “All of our players have played and our statistics continue to improve in all their statistical rankings. Our golf team has worked extremely hard and they will start their offseason strength work and individual instruction next week and continue to practice at the Rhodes Golf Center.”
