MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin mixed rifle team vaulted its way up to No. 12 in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Top 20 rankings after a convincing 15-point victory over Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State in a match that concluded on Monday.
The Skyhawk mixed team posted an aggregate score of 4,565 (2,312 air rifle, 2,253 smallbore) while No. 11 Murray State shot 4,550 (2,283 air rifle, 2,267 smallbore). The UT Martin women’s team compiled a final score of 4,441 (2,261 air rifle, 2,180 smallbore).
“Murray State is a much better team than their score indicates and our performance as a team left a lot to be desired but we got a win over a ranked opponent,” UT Martin head coach Bob Beard said. “Dana Maurizio had a really good day for the mixed team, as did Breanna Flint for the women’s team. Jordan Goodwin fired one of her best air rifle scores and there were some individual high points but we need to do better as a team on this long road trip during fall break.”
Leading the mixed team in air rifle was Maurizio, who fired a career-best 590. Dacotah Faught shot the next best score with a 582, followed by Jessica Cobb (571), Logan Hunt (569) and Steve Hahn (546).
Nikki Kroll fired a 573 as an individual, while Jacob Stolley shot a career-high 565 as an individual. Joe Barefoot (562), Jordan Jensen (560) and Sean O’Brien (560) also competed as individuals.
Pacing the women’s team in air rifle was Flint and Goodwin, who each fired a 571. Jamie Arnett shot a 567 while Alex Haid compiled 552 points and Kelly James fired a 540.
Katrina Klaes (530) competed as an individual for the women’s team in air rifle.
In smallbore, Maurizio’s 570 led the mixed team while Faught and Hahn each shot a 562. O’Brien’s 559 and Barefoot’s 548 rounded out the scoring for the mixed squad.
Kroll fired a 564 as an individual, while Cobb (560), Hunt (556), Stolley (530) and Jensen (521) also shot as individuals.
On the women’s side, Flint shot a 563 to lead the way. James followed with a 551 while Goodwin fired a 543. Klaes’ career-best 523 and Haid’s 496 concluded the scoring.
UT Martin now will face a difficult schedule over the weekend, visiting No. 1 Jacksonville State on Oct. 12, followed by a road matchup at No. 18 Columbus State on Oct. 13 and a matchup at North Georgia on Oct. 14.
