MARTIN, Tenn. – In the first of several preseason accolades, the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team placed two on the 2013-14 Ohio Valley Preseason All-Conference Women’s Basketball first team as announced by College Sports Madness.

The staff at College Sports Madness has picked the top women’s basketball players from the conference. Madness has picked senior guards Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler to make significant contributions to their teams during the upcoming season and deserve significant recognition while naming head coach Kevin McMillan Coach of the Year.

Reigning two-time OVC Player of the Year, Newsome has been tabbed as Madness’ Preseason Player of the Year along with first team honors. Newsome, a three-time All-OVC first teamer, averaged 22.6 points per game, ranking fifth in the nation in scoring en route to the program’s first All-American honors. She is on pace to become just the second player in UT Martin history to score 2,000 points, currently sitting at 1,958 for her career.

Butler joins Newsome on the first team after becoming the program’s first 2,000 point scorer. Butler’s 22.4 points per game last season ranked sixth in the country in scoring. Along with her volume scoring output, Butler has been consistent, setting a pair of NCAA three-point records by making a three-pointer in 80 consecutive games and 34 games in a single season. She tallied 37 points in the Skyhawks’ NCAA Tournament game against eventual Final Four participant Notre Dame, ranking as the highest individual scoring performance in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Enter his fifth year at the helm of the Skyhawk program, McMillan has set numerous new standards for UT Martin basketball. The Skyhawks are coming off their third consecutive OVC Tournament championship in program history, downing No. 2 seed Tennessee Tech 87-80 in overtime on March 9. With the victory, UT Martin would advance to their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, traveling to the Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. McMillan has posted an incredible 74-54 record in his short tenure as head coach.

College Sports Madness will continue to announce all-conference teams leading up to the announcement of Madness Preseason All-Mid Major teams, Madness Preseason All-High Major teams and Madness Preseason All-American teams.
