GOLF TEAM FINISHES FIFTH AFTER FIRING LOWEST FINAL ROUND SCORE AT MURRAY STATE INVITATIONAL

MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team carded the best score out of all 14 teams in the final round of the Murray State Invitational held at Miller Golf Course, shooting a 282 (-2) to take home fifth place.
The Skyhawks (862, +10) were a mere five strokes behind the tournament victors, as Lipscomb defeated Alabama State in a playoff for the tournament crown. The final round also capped off a gradual improvement for UT Martin through the three rounds in the tournament (293 in the first round, 287 in the second round, 282 in the third round).
The UT Martin “B” team shot a round of 307 (+23) today for a tournament total of 919 (+67).
“I’m proud of the way we played today,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We had contributions from all of our guys and we made a run at the title. This wound up being a good tournament for us.”
Freshman Austin Swafford had the second-lowest score out of 82 golfers today, firing a 3-under 68 to finish the tournament in seventh place with a score of 213 (E). Tyler Guy tied for 15th with his three-round total of 217 (+4), which included a 1-under 70 today. Clay Harbin shot a 69 (-2) for the second straight round this afternoon, finishing with a tournament total of 218 (+5). Brendon Caballero (third round 75, +8 overall) and Ben Reeves (third-round 75, +13 overall) rounded out the scoring for UT Martin.
On the “B” team, Tyler Shellnut (+5 overall) and Peyton Deming (+15 overall) each carded a 74 this afternoon. Gavin Shellnut (80 today, +22 overall) and John Michael Sisinni (79 today, +25 overall) concluded the scoring.
UT Martin will now turn its focus on its home fall tournament, as it will play host to the Skyhawk Fall Classic on Oct. 6-8. The tournament will once again take place at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, Tenn.
