MARTIN, Tenn. – After 16 nonconference matches to start the 2013 campaign, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team begins its Ohio Valley Conference slate with a pair of home matches this weekend at Skyhawk Fieldhouse. The Skyhawks will host OVC West rivals SIU Edwardsville on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., followed by a matchup against Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m.
This weekend’s matches mark the first home games for UT Martin since a 3-2 victory over Evansville on Sept. 3. The SIU Edwardsville match on Friday kicks off a four-match OVC homestand in eight days for the Skyhawks.
UT Martin (6-10) has won three of the last four matches against SIU Edwardsville, including two straight home matches. The Skyhawks have achieved similar success against Eastern Illinois recently, winning three of the last four matches and six of the last seven at home since 2006.
Juniors Emily Keaton (173) and Allie Whimpey (152) pace UT Martin in kills. Amanda Crask ranks sixth in the OVC in assists (581, 9.37 per set) while also pacing the team with a .253 attack percentage in 297 attempts. Defensively, Chelsea Bowles ranks sixth in the OVC in digs (284, 4.58 per set) while Julia Devinney leads the team with 42 blocks (0.71 per set).
SIU Edwardsville (4-9) is coming off back-to-back home wins against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Georgia State, winning 3-0 and 3-1 respectively. Those wins snapped a six-match losing streak that spanned nearly two weeks for the Cougars.
Kelsey Augustine ranks in the top-10 in the OVC in both blocks (0.90 per set, seventh) and hitting percentage (.273, 10th), tallying 2.54 kills per set. Mallory Mangun (395 assists, 7.90 per set) also helps lead the offense while Chelsea Colclasure leads the OVC in digs (5.50 per set).
Eastern Illinois (6-7) has won three of its last four matches, finishing as runner-up at the Kent State Flashes Classic last weekend. The Panthers lead the OVC with a .226 attack percentage.
Stephanie Arnold ranks second in the OVC in hitting percentage (.355) and in blocks (1.02 per set). Marah Bradbury averages a league-best 10.14 assists per set while leading the Panthers with a .370 attack percentage in 119 attempts.
