MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team will look to turn up the heat in their quest to defend their title as they open Ohio Valley Conference play with two quick trips to Austin Peay on Friday, Sept. 27 (7 p.m.) and Murray State (1 p.m.) just two days later.
UT Martin looks to improve upon their last match, tallying their third shutout of the season at Saint Louis in a 1-0 victory. The Skyhawks enter this weekend with an overall record of 2-6-1, including a 2-3-0 mark on the road.
Offensively, senior Abi Sanvee leads the team with two goals, including game winners against Saint Louis and Lipscomb. Aoife Lennon, Alyssa Curtis, Hannah McGowen and Michelle Calmeyn have each tallied one goal on the campaign. Freshman Ellie Myrick has the team’s lone assist of the season.
Defensively, the Skyhawk back four is anchored by junior Amy Maksimowicz. Maksimowicz has seen action in 816 of Skyhawks 830 minutes played. The Skyhawk defensive unit has been responsible for three shutouts while allowing one goal or less in six of the nine matches.
In goal, Mariah Klenke has tallied 785 minutes, registering three clean sheets and tallying 57 saves. Klenke is the reigning OVC Goalkeeper of the Week after setting a new UT Martin career record with her 11th career shutout against Saint Louis. Klenke’s 11 career shutouts surpassed Lauren MacKenzie (2010-11) and Johanna Rathbun’s (2007-08) previous career marks of 10. The Highland, Ill. native registered seven saves last Friday evening.
Austin Peay comes into the weekend’s match with an overall record of 5-1-1. The Lady Govs suffered their first defeat of the 2013 campaign, snapping its program-best six-match unbeaten streak to open to season after falling to Buffalo, 1-0 in double-overtime on Sept. 15.
Offensively, Austin Peay ranks first in the OVC in goals (7) and second in points (42) behind Murray State. The Lady Govs are led by Tatiana Ariza, who leads the league in points (14), points per game (2.0), goals (6) and goals per game (0.86). Gina Fabbro has also found the back of the net five times and leads the team with three game-winnings goals.
Nikki Filippone has logged the majority of the minutes in goal for Austin Peay, sporting a 0.43 GAA. She sports a .850 save percentage, making 17 saves in seven matches.
Murray State (3-3-1) enters the weekend on a three-match losing streak. Julie Mooney leads the Racers with three goals and leads the OVC with 5.29 shots per game. Rebecca Bjorkvall also leads the OVC with four assists and 0.67 assists per game.
Along with Mooney’s three goals, the Racers are led with Lauren Frazier, Lyssie Wright, Alexa Hosey and Pavlina Nepokojova’s two goals apiece.
Savanna Haberman has logged the majority of the minutes in goal for Murray State, sporting a 1.34 GAA. She sports a .763 save percentage, making 29 saves in seven matches.
