BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that University of Tennessee at Martin football players J’Vontez Blackmon and Dylan Favre were named adidas OVC Defensive Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, respectively.
Favre and Blackmon were also recognized by College Football Performance Awards late on Sunday. Favre was one of 12 honorable mention names for National Quarterback Performer of the Week, while Blackmon was one of 15 honorable mention names for National Defensive Back Performer of the Week.
Blackmon was also named the Tennessee Sportswriters Association's Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. That marked the second time this season that Blackmon had earned those accolades.
The Skyhawk duo helped UT Martin turn away No. 7 Central Arkansas by a 24-23 margin on Saturday night. That marked the second Skyhawk victory over a Football Championship Subdivision ranked opponent so far in 2013.
A senior out of Bryam, Miss., Blackmon was the hero in UT Martin’s big win. With the Skyhawks holding on to a one-point lead with seven seconds remaining, the 6-0, 193-pounder broke through the line to block a last-second 42-yard field goal attempt from All-Southland Conference kicker Eddie Camara.
That block came after Blackmon helped UT Martin shut out the high-powered Central Arkansas offen se in the first half. He then came up with a crucial interception and 37-yard return in the third quarter after the Bears had gotten within seven points. It was Blackmon’s second pick of the season and fourth career interception in less than two seasons at UT Martin.
A 5-10, 195-pound junior, Favre earned the start and guided the Skyhawks to the victory in UT Martin’s home opener. He helped UT Martin jump out to a 14-0 halftime lead and engineered a scoring drive that ended with the eventual game-winning 24-yard touchdown pass with 6:53 remaining after Central Arkansas trimmed its deficit to three points.
The Kiln, Miss. native completed 73.7 percent of his passes (14-for-19) for 146 yards and three touchdowns against zero interceptions. Favre also added a co-game-high 78 yards on the ground on 20 carries.
The Skyhawks will rest up during a bye week before traveling to Cape Girardeau, Mo. for their OVC opener at Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Sept. 28.
