TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team burst into the scoring column with two goals, but it was a pair of early scores by host Indiana State that proved to be too much to overcome, falling 4-2.

The Skyhawks (1-6-1) found their groove on offense, as juniors Alyssa Curtis and Michelle Calmeyn each tallied their first goals of the season against Indiana State. Curtis and Calmeyn each tallied four shots, with Calmeyn leading the team with three shots on goal. Curtis tallied two shots on goal while freshman Ellie Myrick contributed one on the afternoon.

In goal the Skyhawks leaned on junior Mariah Klenke. Klenke registered three saves on the afternoon while allowing four goals in 90 minutes of play.

Indiana State wasted little time getting on the board, scoring their first goal of the day just eight minutes in. Abby Reed used a well-placed cross into the box which Kate Johnson used to beat the keeper and score into an empty net at the 7:12 mark.

The Sycamores sailed five more kicks before Amy Maksimowicz tallied the first shot for the Skyhawks at the 24:23 mark, sailing just wide.

In the 29th minute it was Reed who registered a goal of her own to push the Indiana State lead out to 2-0. Sydney Lovelace used a cross across the box to find Reed for her fourth goal on the season, off a header.

UT Martin would respond just four minutes later as Curtis capitalized on an opportunity for her first goal of the season. Curtis took a rebound off the goal and found the back of the net at the 32:46 mark to bring the Skyhawks within one goal, trailing 2-1.

At the break, Indiana State held a 13-2 advantage over UT Martin in the shot column.

The second half saw the Skyhawks and Sycamores exchange numerous shot attempts until ISU snuck their third goal into the net in the 82nd minute. Johnson found the back of the net for her second time on the day as Sydney Lovelace used an assist off a free kick to set up Johnson for a header, her fourth goal of the season.

Indiana State would find the touch again just five minutes later as Emily Chura found a rebound off a long pass to beat Klenke from 12 yards out, giving the Sycamores a 4-1 lead at the 86:14 mark.

Down but not out, the Skyhawks would respond with a late goal at the 89:56 mark off the leg of Calmeyn. Senior Hannah McGowen rifled a corner kick into the box which Calmeyn quickly swept up and placed into the netting to bring the final score to a 4-2 ISU advantage.

The Skyhawks will be back in action as they continue their four-game road trip with Saint Louis on Friday, Sept. 20. Action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
