MARTIN, Tenn. – Mike Meschede, the University of Tennessee at Martin all-time leading scorer in men’s basketball, passed away after a hard-fought battle with renal cancer on Thursday, Aug. 29. He was 47.

Meschede played at UT Martin from 1984-88 under head coach Tom Hancock. He improved his scoring total in every season, concluding his stellar career with 1,729 points – which still stands as the most in the history of UT Martin men’s basketball.

A 6-4, 200-pound shooting guard out of Merrillville, Ind., Meschede’s best season came during his senior campaign in 1987-88. That season, Meschede averaged 23.7 points per game while helping lead the Pacers to a 20-8 overall record and 12-4 mark in the Gulf South Conference, earning a GSC championship.

Meschede was a two-time All-GSC first teamer (1986-87, 1987-88) and was the GSC Player of the Year in 1987-88. He was inducted into the UT Martin Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.

In addition to holding the distinction of UT Martin’s all-time leading scorer, Meschede  still holds the program record for most three-pointers made (10 out of 14 against Mississippi College on Jan. 16, 1988) and most free throws made in a career (415). He also ranks in the career top-10 in field goals made (575, second), steals (154, fourth), three-point field goals made (144, sixth) and assists (257, ninth).
