August 17, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team held its second scrimmage of fall camp this evening at Hardy Graham Stadium.
The offense produced eight touchdowns this evening, piling up 564 yards on 102 plays. The five Skyhawk quarterbacks combined to go 25-for-54 for 286 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, UT Martin tallied 48 rushing attempts for 278 yards.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jarod Neal went 18-for-30 for 208 yards and four touchdowns (against zero interceptions) to pace the offense. Neal also added a 13-yard rushing touchdown.
Senior wideout Jeremy Butler led the way for the Skyhawk receivers, hauling in five catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Trent Garland (four-yard touchdown reception) and Kyle Kerrick (15-yard touchdown reception) also added scores tonight.
Junior transfer Abou Toure received the bulk of the carries this evening, leading the Skyhawks tailbacks with 14 carries for 114 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown scamper. Dylan Favre (one-yard touchdown on the scrimmage’s opening drive) and Roland Genesy (nine-yard touchdown) also accounted for scores on the ground.
Defensively, the Skyhawks were responsible for 14 plays of zero or negative yardage. The defense forced 29 incomplete passes and held the running backs to three or less yards on 26 out of 48 carries.
Leon Carlton III accounted for the defense’s interception, while Ben Johnson recovered a fumble on the offense’s fourth drive of the scrimmage. Marquis Clemons led the way with two tackles for loss – including a sack for a 10-yard loss.
On special teams, the duo of Jackson Redditt and Mitch Mersman combined to make four field goals and go 6-for-6 on PAT attempts. Redditt successfully booted attempts from 39 and 34 yards out, while Mersman converted a 44-yarder and a 25-yarder. Meanwhile, James Satterfield launched four punts for an average of 42.8 yards and Redditt punted twice for an average of 40.5 yards per attempt.
“Offensively, we weren’t where we are last year but we were good in spots,” UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. “Jeremy Butler made some big plays and our quarterbacks made some good throws. I was very disappointed in our team defense. We showed poor tackling and gave up too many big runs. We have to get better.”
The Skyhawks officially open the 2013 campaign at in-state rival Chattanooga on Thursday, Aug. 29. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CST.
