UTM GOLF WELL-REPRESENTED AT TENNESSEE STATE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

MARTIN, Tenn. – Two current and three former University of Tennessee at Martin golfers put together solid performances at the 98th Tennessee State Amateur Championship, held at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club.

The tournament began on Tuesday, Aug. 6 with 156 competitors before the field was narrowed down to 65 golfers who made the cut after the second round of play on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Steven Fox out of Hendersonville won the tournament by five strokes with a final score of 270 (-10).

Current Skyhawks Brendon Caballero and Ben Reeves, along with former UT Martin golfers Graham Sleigh, Cole Floyd and Taylor Deming all made the cut and finished in the top-44.

Caballero, who will be a junior at UT Martin this fall, finished in a tie for 18th with a score of 284 (+4). The Brentwood, Tenn. native fired a 70 in the first round, a 74 in the second round, a 71 in the third round before concluding with a score of 69 this afternoon. All in all, he tallied 12 birdies in the tournament – five of which came in the first round.

A Clarksville, Tenn. native, Sleigh tied Caballero for 18th place with a 284 (+4). He was responsible for a 72 in the first round, a 68 in the second round, a 71 in the third round and a 73 in the final round. Sleigh, who completed his collegiate eligibility in the spring of 2013, accounted for 14 birdies in four days – including five apiece in each in the first two rounds.

Reeves shot a 285 (+5) for the tournament, finishing in a tie for 22nd. The Knoxville, Tenn. native who will be a sophomore for UT Martin this season compiled scores of 74, 67, 69 and 75 in the tournament. He recorded 11 birdies over the four rounds, including six in the second round alone.

A Skyhawk from 2006-09, Floyd finished in a tie for 35th in the tournament. He came away with rounds of 70, 70, 77 and 72 for a final tally of 289 (+9). The Waynesboro, Tenn. native produced 14 birdies in the tournament, including five in the second round.

Deming fired a 291 (+11) for the tournament, finishing in a tie for 44th. The Franklin, Tenn. native, who was a senior on last season’s UT Martin squad, carded rounds of 71, 74, 73 and 73. He finished with 11 birdies in the tournament, four of which occurred in the third round.
