MARTIN, Tenn. – Victor “Bubba” Cates, who recently completed his 15th season at the helm of The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball program, has been reassigned to a full-time instructor position in the university’s department of mathematics and statistics.

As head coach of the Skyhawks, Cates tallied four 20-win seasons – all of which came in a six-year span from 2006-11. He came to UT Martin in the summer of 1998 from Jackson State Community College after developing the Generals into a nationally ranked program, which included a trip to the 1996 Junior College World Series. Cates’ overall record while at UT Martin was 236-557-1 (.298 winning percentage) with a 92-277-1 record (.250) in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Under Cates, the UT Martin baseball program tallied their first-ever Ohio Valley Conference Tournament victory in 2011. The Skyhawks also produced a Major League Baseball draft pick in each of the last three seasons under the direction of Cates.

“It has been a blessing to work with Coach Cates and I commend him for his tireless efforts over the last 15 years,” said Phil Dane, UT Martin director of athletics.

In 2010, Cates was the recipient of the Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, one of the highest honors in the coaching profession.

“There are coaches who win and there are coaches who are winners,” Dane said. “Coach Cates is a winner. In my opinion he has earned the right to have more chances than most coaches would have been given, and I am proud that I have been able to work with him.”

A national search for UT Martin’s next head baseball coach will begin immediately.
