NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Derek Carr, who set numerous passing records during his University of Tennessee at Martin playing career, was presented his 2013 Tennessee Sports Writers Association award at an awards luncheon on Saturday, July 13 at the TSSAA Headquarters.

Carr was named the TSWA College Football Player of the Year on Jan. 27 in a vote by TSWA members. That came on the heels of a 2012 season where the 6-1, 191-pound Carr ranked in the top-10 in the nation in points responsible for (17.45 per game, fifth), passing yards per game (397.82, seventh) and total passing yards (3,276, eighth) while leading UT Martin to an 8-3 overall record.

Carr’s spectacular redshirt senior season campaign in 2012 ranks amongst one of the all-time greatest season by an Ohio Valley Conference quarterback. The McKenzie, Tenn. native ranks in the single-season top-five in the OVC record book in touchdowns (31, second), passing yards (3,276, fourth) and completions (264, fifth).

Last season, Carr was the only Football College Subdivision or Football Bowl Subdivision player to complete seven touchdown passes on two separate occasions (at Murray State on Oct. 13 and against Jacksonville State on Nov. 3). In the game at Murray State, he set the NCAA single-game mark with a 243.78 passing efficiency ranking after completing 42-of-46 passes for 560 yards (the most yards thrown by an OVC player all season) against zero interceptions.

Carr accumulated multiple touchdown passes in six games in 2012 – including four games of at least four touchdowns. He earned National Player of the Week, National Offensive Player of the Week, National Performer of the Week and National Quarterback of the Week honors throughout the year.

A three-year starter (2010-12), Carr wrapped up his Skyhawk career as the school’s all-time record holder with 69 touchdown passes (third in OVC history), 8,484 yards of total offense (fourth in OVC), 665 completions (fourth in OVC), 8,428 passing yards (fourth in OVC) and 1,110 pass attempts (fifth in OVC).

In May, Carr received a mini-camp tryout with the NFL’s New York Giants. He will stay on with the Skyhawks as an offensive graduate assistant in 2013.
