MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team got on the board first but it wasn’t enough to overcome a tough sixth inning, falling 5-1 to Austin Peay in Ohio Valley Conference action at Skyhawk Field today.

UT Martin (10-36, 3-23 OVC) was led by Grant Glasser, Taylor Cox and Hagen Nelson each tallying one hit. Cox tallied the only RBI of the game for the Skyhawks.

Despite one tough inning, the Skyhawks were led on the mound by sophomore Cox (0-6), who fired two strikeouts in five innings of work while allowing no walks. Classmate Carter Smith appeared in relief, pitching four scoreless innings while striking out two APSU Govs.

The host Skyhawks broke into the scoring column early, scoring first in the bottom of the first inning. Glasser got the inning started off with a lead-off single through the left side before Mastromatteo dropped a well-placed bunt to sacrifice himself and move the runner into scoring position with one out. Pitcher Cox then showed his versatility, singling into left center to score Glasser from third after a stolen base.

The game took an interesting twist in the fifth inning. After the Governors tallied three consecutive singles, scoring one, fans experienced a moment rarely seen on the diamond. With runners on first and second with no outs, the Skyhawks converted their second elusive triple play on the season with a 4-6-3 line out by Hankins.

The sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game as the visiting Govs exploded for four runs in the top half of the inning after five consecutive batters reached on base hits as Harper, Hudson, Davis and Carlson recorded RBIs in the inning.

The Skyhawks and Govs will meet in the series finale tomorrow, May 12. First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m. from Skyhawk Park with Senior Day festivities to be conducted approximately 30 minutes prior to the game.
