MARTIN, Tenn. – Derek Carr, the lead signal-caller for The University of Tennessee at Martin football team the last three seasons, has been selected to participate in a mini-camp tryout with the New York Giants over the weekend.

Carr will compete in a series of practices on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 to earn a spot on the Giants roster. New York finished last season with a 9-7 record under head coach Tom Coughlin, one year after capturing its eighth Super Bowl crown in 2011. Jerry Reese, the Giants Senior Vice President and General Manager, is a 1986 graduate of UT Martin after a four-year standout career under head coaches Lynn Amedee (1981) and Fred Pickard (1982-84).

A native of McKenzie, Tenn., Carr will go down as one of the best quarterbacks not only in UT Martin history, but in the history of the Ohio Valley Conference. He was the only FCS or FBS player to throw for seven touchdowns in two different games in 2012, accomplishing the feat at Murray State on Oct. 13 and against Jacksonville State on Nov. 3. In that game at Murray State, he set an NCAA single-game record for passing efficiency (243.78) after he went 42-for-46 for 560 yards (the most yards thrown by an OVC player all season) with no interceptions.

This past fall, Carr ranked in the top-10 nationally in points responsible for (17.45 per game, fifth), passing yards per game (397.82, seventh) and total passing yards (3,276, eighth). He ended his stellar career ranking third in the OVC in touchdown passes (69), fourth in total offense (8,484), fourth in completions (665), fourth in passing yards (8,428) and fifth in pass attempts (1,110). He also ranked amongst the OVC’s all-time bests with 31 touchdown passes (second in single-season history), 3,276 passing yards (fourth) and 264 completions (fifth) in 2012.

Carr threw for multiple touchdowns in six games last season, including four games of at least four scores. He earned National Player of the Week, National Offensive Player of the Week, National Performer of the Week and National Quarterback of the Week accolades throughout a senior campaign that saw UT Martin post an 8-3 record and OVC-best .727 winning percentage.
