BASEBALL TEAM FALLS IN DOUBLEHEADER AT SIU EDWARDSVILLE
May 4, 2013
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team finally got on the field this afternoon but fell in both ends of a doubleheader at SIU Edwardsville, 10-1 and 5-3.
The Skyhawks – playing for the first time since April 23 thanks to four straight rainouts – were led today by two hits apiece by Sonny Mastromatteo and Taylor Cox. Grant Glasser and Kyle Bargery both drove in a run, while Luis Paublini, Hagen Nelson, Nico Zych and Byron Johann all scored a run today for UT Martin (10-32, 3-20 Ohio Valley Conference).
On the mound, John Houston and Carter Smith each posted a scoreless relief appearance today, as Houston tossed 2.1 frames while allowing one hit to go along with two strikeouts in Game 1 while Smith fanned two over a scoreless inning in the nighcap. Dan Tobik (nine earned runs in 5.2 innings) and Cox (five earned runs in seven innings) were charged with losses today.
These two teams will close out their three-game series on Sunday, May 5 at 1 p.m.
SIU Edwardsville jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings on its way to the win in the series opener.
The Skyhawks got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Johann was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a Matt Haynes single. After a deep flyout by Cox advanced Johann to third, Johann came around to score on a wild pitch to make the score 7-1.
However, the Cougars answered back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead. Although Houston held SIU Edwardsville scoreless over the seventh and eighth, the Skyhawk offense couldn’t generate any more runs.
A five-run inning by SIU Edwardsville proved to be the difference in the Cougars’ 5-3 win in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Cox held SIU Edwardsville scoreless through the first three frames until the Cougars struck for five runs in the fourth – four of which came with two outs.
UT Martin wasted little time getting back in the game, plating two runs in the top of the fifth. Zych (walk) and Paublini (hit by pitch) both reached safely to lead off the inning, then moved up 90 feet thanks to a passed ball. After a walk to Nelson loaded the bases, Bargery drew an eight-pitch walk to score Zych and make the score 5-1. Glasser then drove in Paublini on a fielder’s choice to pull the Skyhawks within three runs.
Cox then shut down SIU Edwardsville the rest of the way, allowing just four singles over the final four innings.
The Skyhawks tacked on another run in the seventh, as Nelson got things started with a leadoff single. Nelson would advance on a groundout then come around to score on a fielding error to make the score 5-3.
UT Martin would bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth thanks to a Bargery walk and Glasser single, but the Cougars held on for the win.
