OLD HICKORY, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team strung together a solid two-round score of 580 (+4) at the Tennessee State Big Blue Intercollegiate, but sit in ninth place after Day One at the Hermitage Golf Club.
The Skyhawks shot a 292 in the first round and followed with an even-par performance (288) in the second round. Southern Illinois leads the event with a score of 567 (-9). Overall, seven of the 14 teams are under par through 36 holes.
“Today was a fantastic day for golf,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “I’m not overly disappointed because we didn’t play bad at all, everybody else just played really well.”
Freshman Ben Reeves led the Skyhawks after the first round, carding a 70. Brendon Caballero shot an even-par 72 after 18 holes, followed by Tyler Shellnut (76), Clay Harbin (76) and Graham Sleigh (80).
Caballero fired a 69 in the second round, tied for the second-lowest score out of 93 competitors in the tournament. Sleigh shaved eight shots off his first round total with a second-round 72, followed by Shellnut (73), Reeves (74) and Harbin (75).
Tyler Guy’s 142 (72, 70) ranks third out of all individuals in the tournament, followed by Taylor Deming (146; 72, 74) and John Michael Sisinni (148; 72, 76).
“We played the par-5’s very poorly as a team and made a few double bogeys,” Carpenter said. “We need to play a little smarter tomorrow and move up a few spots.”
Tuesday’s final round will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start at the Hermitage Golf Club.
