BASEBALL TEAM FALLS IN OPENING GAME OF EASTERN KENTUCKY SERIES
April 12, 2013
RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team began its three-game series at Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky with a 30-4 loss at Turkey Hughes Field.
The Skyhawks (9-24, 2-14 OVC) were tied with the Colonels after the top of the second inning before Eastern Kentucky broke the game open, despite a three-run sixth inning by UT Martin.
Hagen Nelson drove in a pair of runs to lead the Skyhawks this afternoon. Byron Johann tallied an RBI to go along with a run scored today, while Nico Zych also accounted for an RBI. Kyle Bargery, Wade Collins and Matt Haynes all crossed the plate once for UT Martin.
On the mound, starting pitcher Dan Tobik (1-5) took the loss after allowing six runs in 1.2 innings.
Collins and Haynes opened the second with back-to-back singles to help get the Skyhawks on the scoreboard. After a sacrifice bunt by Matt Young moved both runners up 90 feet, Zych drove in Collins on a fielder’s choice.
In the sixth, Bargery drew a one-out walk to start a rally. On the next pitch, Johann drove his 11th double of the season out to center, plating Bargery. Haynes was then hit by a pitch and after a wild pitch, Nelson produced a pinch-hit single up the middle to score two runs. However, UT Martin’s rally would end there.
These two teams will play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. CST.
