TENNIS TEAM SPLITS OVC ROAD SWING THROUGH KENTUCKY
April 8, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team continued its grueling April schedule over the weekend, winning 5-2 at Morehead State on Saturday before falling 7-0 at Eastern Kentucky on Sunday.
The win over Morehead State was the third straight Ohio Valley Conference victory for the Skyhawks, who are now 5-11 overall with a 4-2 league mark. It was also the fourth match in six days for UT Martin, who has had to rearrange their spring schedule because of several rainouts.
“The Morehead State win was a good one for our team,” Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. “Eastern Kentucky is definitely the best team in our league but we were exhausted. But that’s part of it – we will get back at it on Tuesday at Eastern Illinois.”
Against Morehead State, the Skyhawks swept the doubles point. Katie McCall and Johanie Van Zyl won 8-2 at No. 2, while Anna Winkelmann and Jessica Silva picked up an 8-2 victory at No. 3. Ivon Simic and Anna Marie Herbold rounded out the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 1.
UT Martin picked up victories at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 in singles action. McCall earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6, while Winkelmann was responsible for a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Silva (6-3, 6-2) and Van Zyl (6-4, 7-5) also compiled victories at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively.
The Skyhawks battled throughout against OVC leader Eastern Kentucky (15-6, 8-0 OVC) but couldn’t break through. Silva and Winkelmann were deadlocked in a 4-4 tie at No. 3 doubles before the set was abruptly ended because the Colonels had locked up the doubles point. McCall came the closest to a UT Martin victory in singles, falling 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
UT Martin returns to the court on Tuesday, April 9 when it travels to Eastern Illinois at 3 p.m.
