The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will hit the road with a pair of Ohio Valley Conference doubleheaders on the horizon. The Skyhawks will first head to Tennessee Tech with first pitch schedule for noon on Saturday. UTM will then cross state lines as they travel to Jacksonville, Ala. to take on Jacksonville State with game one set for 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks (25-9, 7-2 OVC) come into the weekend on the wings of a season-best eight game winning streak, including six in OVC action. UTM ranks 58th in the latest RPI rankings and have outscored their opponents 180-110 while maintaining a 2.57 team ERA.
Most of UT Martin’s success has been provided by solid power hitting throughout the middle of the lineup, speed and starting pitching. Sophomore Lauren Smith goes into the weekend riding a 10-game hitting streak, in which she’s posted a .630 batting average while belting three home runs and tallying nine RBIs. Smith leads the team with a .362 batting average and eight home runs. Senior Leah Taylor, also posting a .362 batting average along with five home runs and 20 RBIs, has stolen 27 bases in 30 chances. Kenzi Tate leads the team with 33 RBIs while posting a .356 average and seven home runs.
Inside the circle, the Skyhawks rely on sophomores Casey Vincent (9-4, 2.08 ERA) and Tate (14-1, 2.44 ERA) to anchor the starting rotation. The sophomore duo of Vincent and Tate have accounted for 194 of the 231.1 innings pitch on the season, recording 11 complete games each. Tate, the OVC leader in wins (14) and winning percentage (.933), has won nine consecutive starts while shutting out five.
