JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team shaved 11 strokes off its first round score and now sits in ninth place out of 20 teams after Day 1 of the Arkansas State Red Wolves Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club.
The 20-team field concluded the first two rounds around 7:30 p.m. last night. After UT Martin shot a 303 in the first round, the Skyhawks carded a solid round of 292 to complete their Day 1 participation. UT Martin stands third amongst Ohio Valley Conference schools in the tournament with their cumulative score of 595.
“Our practice round was washed out by about an inch-and-a-half of rain on Sunday and that hurt us,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We started out in the hole but we played better in the last nine holes of the first round. We hit more greens and made a few more birdie putts in the second round.”
Ben Reeves led UT Martin after two rounds of play, tallying a score of 147 (77, first round, 70 second round). Graham Sleigh paced the Skyhawks after the first round with a 73 before compiling a 75 in the second round for a total of 148. Tyler Shellnut (81, 71) fired a 152, followed closely by Brendon Caballero’s 153 (77, 76) and John Michael Sisinni (155), who shot 76 in the first round and a 79 in the second round.
Senior Taylor Deming also competed as an individual in the tournament, carding a 75 in both rounds for a total score of 150.
