Live Stats Game Notes
The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team is set to host Ohio Valley Conference West division rival Austin Peay in the early weekend Easter series. First pitch of Friday’s doubleheader at Bettye Giles Field is set for 1 p.m. with the second game directly to follow. The Skyhawks will quickly turn around as the series finale is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Skyhawks (20-9, 4-2 OVC) return home after being on the road for the last four games after dominating performances against Tennessee State and Belmont. UTM outhit their opponents 44-29 last week, including a plus-28 run differential. Skyhawk pitchers tossed a combined four complete games, including one shutout while posting 1.75 ERA and 26:7 strikeout to walk ratio.
UT Martin used a unique combination of power and speed as Skyhawk hitters pounded five home runs while stealing 10 bases in five games. Sophomore Lauren Smith posted an incredible .692 batting average while stroking nine hits, including one home run while driving in three over the last five games. Freshman Mikala Torrence moved into the designated player role, notching a .583 batting average and one steal. The outfield trio of Becca Williams, Kayla Wade and Leah Taylor combined for 13 hits, two home runs and 14 RBIs while also swiping nine bases in the process.
The circle once again proved to be the difference as sophomore Casey Vincent (8-4, 2.08 ERA) and Kenzi Tate (11-1, 2.66 ERA) notched a combined 1.75 ERA. Vincent pitched 21.1 innings while striking out 15 and allowing just two walks and three earned runs. Tate tallied two wins, including a shutout victory over Tennessee State.
Austin Peay (10-13, 1-4 OVC) enters the matchup led offensively by a pair of high-powered hitters in junior shortstop Kayla Davidson (.379, four home runs and 15 RBIs) and sophomore second baseman Laurel Burroughs (.380, three home runs and 18 RBIs). In the circle, junior Lauren de Castro (5-6, 3.15 ERA) and senior Morgan Brewer (5-6, 5.11 ERA) lead the Lady Govs.
The Skyhawks own a three game winning streak going into the matchup with Austin Peay.
