RODEO TEAMS PERFORM WELL AT EAST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin rodeo teams continued its spring slate at East Mississippi Community College this past weekend, as the men’s squad finished second and the women’s team tied for sixth against a very competitive field.
The Skyhawk men’s team tallied 695 points, just 50 points behind the leader (West Alabama). Meanwhile, the women’s team accrued 120 points, just 60 points out of second place.
In the men’s bareback competition, Tyler Waltz finished first in the average (151). The junior out of Jersey Shore, Pa. led after the first go (79) and placed second in the short go (72).
Jordan Thrasher and Lane Mitchell each represented UT Martin in tie down roping. Thrasher finished fourth in the average (23.3) after rounds of 13.1 and 10.2, while Mitchell’s average of 25.2 split fifth and sixth after posting scores of 12.4 and 12.8.
Natalie Fletcher got the women’s team off to a great start, as she brought home first place honors in breakaway roping. She compiled a 3.8 in the first go and an event-best 3.4 in the short go, winning with an average of 7.2.
UT Martin boasted five of the top six participants in average in steer wrestling. Will Lummus finished first in the average (8.6) after a first go round of 4.2 and a short go score of 4.4. Robert Joyce placed third in the event (9.5 average) after posting scores of 4.5 in the first go and 5.0 in the short go. Clark Adcock (fourth place, 9.9 average, event-best score of 3.8 in the short go), John Alley (fifth place, 10.9 average) and Clay Brewer (sixth place, 11.0 average) also represented the Skyhawks in the event.
In team roping, Clay Mitchell and Lane Mitchell finished fourth in average (29.6) thanks to a strong performance in the first go (7.4, second-highest score). Alley and Adcock produced a fifth place finish in the average (5.6 on 1) after an event-high score of 5.6 in the first go. Cody Inman teamed with Southern Arkansas’ Tyler Cornett to finish sixth in the average (8.1 on 1) while Ben Walker teamed with Zach Mabry of Troy for a 12.7 score in the first go.
Mary Francis Gorsuch took part for UT Martin in the barrel racing event, scoring a 17.2 in the first go and 17.3 in the short go for an average of 34.5.
UT Martin will take next weekend off before returning to action at Northwest Mississippi Community College on April 4-6.
