SKYHAWK SOFTBALL USES EARLY INNING BLAST TO CRUISE TO 6-1 VICTORY OVER TREVECCA

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team leaned on dominant pitching and early inning production to cruise to the mid-week victory over Trevecca Nazarene 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
UT Martin (17-8) wasted no time on the afternoon scoring two runs in the first inning. Kayla Wade got the inning started with a walk before cranking the motor and stealing second. Wade was rewarded when senior Leah Taylor lined a double to left field, plating the speedster. Kenzi Tate joined the action with a double to the center field fence scoring Taylor.
The Skyhawks got back on the board in the bottom of the second as Deven Wilson led off the inning with a seeing-eye single through the left hole. Fellow freshman Jessie Britt drove a line drive onto the right field deck for her first career home run, plating two and giving the Skyhawks the 4-0 lead.
Britt tallied her second run of the game in the fourth as a Trojan miscue at third off the bat of Taylor scored the second baseman from second.
Trevecca (6-5) joined the action in the sixth with a lead-off infield single by Aubrey Jordan. Jordan wasted no time on the base paths, swiping second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. The Trojans then broke the shutout as a throwing error allowed the runner from third to score.
UTM responded in the bottom of the inning as Taylor took a pitch off the wrist and stole second. Lauren Smith then launched her second hit of the game, doubling off the center field fence scoring Taylor from second.
Casey Vincent (7-3, 2.21 ERA) posted yet another dominating performance in the circle, notching the lefty’s eighth complete game of the season. Vincent allowed just four hits while allowing no earned runs through seven innings of work. She tallied five strikeouts and issued just one walk on the afternoon.
Taylor finished 1-for-2 on the day with two stolen bases, one RBI and two runs scored.
“Often times you see a team like Trevecca come into a game like this with nothing to lose and everything to gain. We were able to push the runs across early and get solid pitching from Vincent to shut the opponent down. We’ve seen our top six hitters do a great job this year, if you look at their averages up and down the line-up, we’re able to hit the ball,” UT Martin head coach Donley Canary said. “We’re just trying to find the consistency to continue to add on after getting a team down early in the ballgame and look ahead to critical conference games on the horizon with Belmont and Tennessee State.”
