UTM COMPILES NINE PERSONAL BESTS AT RHODES COLLEGE OPEN MEET

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin resumed its spring track season this past weekend, making the short trek to Memphis to compete in the Rhodes College Open Meet.
In the women’s 10,000 meter run, UT Martin was led by Amanda Wardlaw’s third place finish of 40:06.19. Laura Wind (41:29.08), Alexandra Stover (43:29.81) and Samantha Hunt (44:05.48) also recorded impressive showings for the Skyhawks.
Tallon Scott’s time of 34:59.23 paced UT Martin in the men’s 10,000 meter run, while Josiah Roberts finished with a 37:57.90 in the event.
Hannah Wolters (19:57.86) and Kathryn Skaggs (21:16.10) took part in the women’s 5,000 meter run, while Justin Morgan (16:02.47, 11th) just missed a top-10 spot in the men’s 5,000 meter run.
Three Skyhawks competed in the women’s one mile run, led by Kaycee Grimes (5:44.70). Abby Frantom and Grace Lucas finished with times of 5:50.31 and 5:53.43, respectively. On the men’s side, Ryan Pett placed sixth with a time of 4:27.12, while Mark Graubner (4:51.88) and Zach Phifer (4:55.09) to round out UT Martin’s participation in the one mile run.
In the 800 meter run, Kaycee Grimes (2:33.27) was the lone participant for the women’s team, while Pett represented the Skyhawk men with a final time of 2:02.67.
Skyhawk head coach Gordon Sanders was impressed with his team’s effort.
“Nine personal bests of 15 entrants is a good start to the outdoor season,” Sanders said. “Amanda and Laura placed third and fifth in their first 10,000 meter run and Ryan was sixth of 44 milers. Another highlight was Justin dropping another 26 seconds off of his 5k best. With three weeks to the next competition, we have time to fix some problem areas and prepare for end of season peaks.”
The Skyhawks will return to competition on Saturday, April 6 when they take part in the Simmons Invite at Murray State University.
