The University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks softball team is set to open the home portion of the 2013 schedule against Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss after spending the first 21 games on the road, seeing stops in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from Bettye Giles Field.
The Skyhawks are coming off their most successful week of the season, posting a 7-1 record with wins over Sacred Heart (1-0), Holy Cross (5-0), Saint Francis (2-0), Detroit Mercy (11-2), Penn (1-0, 5-2) and Niagara (6-1) in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
“The trip proved to be a great learning experience for our team,” Canary said. “Being able to get a young group together, work on on-field development and really see the team start to put things together will make us successful in the future. We were able to move players around and really begin to plug and fill holes within our depth chart.”
Sophomores Kenzi Tate and Casey Vincent provided dominating performances in the circle, posting spotless records and a combined four shutouts. Tate posted a 3-0 record with a 0.32 ERA and 21 strikeouts, allowing just one run and six walks in 22.0 innings pitched. Vincent was equally in control with three wins and stiffling 0.33 ERA, surrendering 11 hits in 21 innings. She struck out 15 while issuing just one free pass.
When not in the circle, Tate tallied four home runs with 9 RBIs, including going a perfect 4-for-4 with two home runs against Detroit Mercy. Freshman Jessie Britt closed out the last five games hitting .545 with two doubles and two stolen bases, moving herself up the depth chart. UT Martin record holder Leah Taylor, swiped eight bases and crushed one home run while hitting a solid .381 at the plate.
The Skyhawks will look to avenge their early season loss to Ole Miss, 9-8. UTM held the 7-2 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh before the Rebel offense struck for five in the half and eventually the winning run in the eighth.
