TENNIS TEAM CONCLUDES SPRING BREAK ROAD TRIP AT WEST FLORIDA, SOUTH ALABAMA
March 11, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team battled hard in the final two matches of its Spring Break trip, but the Skyhawks fell 7-0 at West Florida and 6-1 at South Alabama.
Taking on a West Florida squad that is ranked No. 10 in the nation in the NCAA Division-II ranks, the Skyhawks earned a victory at No. 3 doubles when Anna Winkelmann and Jessica Silva claimed an 8-3 triumph. However, that would be the only matchup in which UT Martin could gain the upper hand.
Against an 8-4 South Alabama team, UT Martin kept things close in doubles action but ultimately fell in a trio of close outings (8-6 at No. 1, 8-4 at No. 2 and No. 3). In singles play, Ivon Simic outlasted Mariya Krachok by a 7-5, 1-6, 11-9 score at No. 1. However, that would be the only victory for the Skyhawks, although Anna Marie Herbold came very close to winning at No. 2 before falling in a three-set heartbreaker (6-1, 4-6, 10-6).
“In order to be ready for conference play we scheduled the strongest non-conference opponents possible during spring break,” Skyhawk head coach Dennis Taylor said. “The girls were starting to play well and the team was coming together and then Jessica went down with a twisted ankle at West Florida. Up until that point, Jess had really been playing well. If we can get her back in the lineup for this weekend we should be very competitive.”
The Skyhawks now begin Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend when they host SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois on March 16-17. Because of ongoing construction on the tennis courts on campus, these matches will take place at nearby Union City Middle School at 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
