The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will look to continue its recent success in the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Tournament as the Skyhawks are the No. 4 seed and received an automatic bye into the league quarterfinals with a matchup against No. 5 seed Eastern Kentucky at noon Wednesday.
UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan and the Skyhawks will ride a five-game winning streak into the OVC Tournament.
The Skyhawks (16-14, 11-5 OVC) enter the game after trumping Austin Peay, 81-64, on the road to close out the regular season. The dynamic duo of junior guards Jasmine Newsome, fresh off being named OVC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and Defensive Player of the Year, and Heather Butler, named All-OVC first team, lead the Skyhawks with 21.9 points per game each. The tandem currently ranks seventh and eighth respectively in the nation in points per game, making UT Martin the only school in the nation to boast two top-10 scorers..
In addition to leading the OVC in scoring, Newsome also paces the league in assists (5.6 per game) and steals (3.1 per game). She swiped three or more steals in an astonishing 19 games, including a career-best seven steals at SIU Edwardsville on Jan. 26. She won the league’s Player of the Week award seven times in 2012-13, including three straight times to close out the regular season.
Butler, last year’s OVC Tournament MVP, became the first UT Martin basketball player to register 2,000 career points at the 5:32 mark of the first half at Austin Peay. She currently stands at a program-record 2,005 points and also is the Skyhawks’ career leader in three-point field goals made. The Medina native boasts an active NCAA record in consecutive games with a made three-pointer (76) and has reached double-figures in the scoring column in all 93 career games.
The Skyhawks head into the OVC Tournament as the two-time defending champion, taking a spotless record into historic Municipal Auditorium since 2004.
