SOFTBALL TEAM SPENDS SPRING BREAK IN FLORIDA; PLAYS EIGHT GAMES IN FIVE DAYS

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawk softball team is in Florida for spring break, but it won’t be having fun in the sun. Instead, the Skyhawks will play eight games in five days, beginning at 9 a.m., Monday, March 4.

The Skyhawks will play in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., March 4-8.

“This is a great way to get a lot of work in before the conference schedule starts,” UT Martin head coach Donley Canary said. “We will play two games each day, with the exception of Wednesday, against teams from all over the country.”

The Skyhawks open their week-long stay in the Sunshine State against Sacred Heart at 9 a.m. Monday. The Skyhawks will also play at 11 a.m. against Holy Cross.

Tuesday’s schedule includes a 1 p.m. game against St. Francis and then a 3 p.m. game against Detroit-Mercy.

The Skyhawks will play Penn twice on Thursday, once at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., while Friday’s schedule includes a 9 a.m. game against South Dakota and an 11 a.m. game against Niagara.

UT Martin sports a 3-2 record against three of the teams – Penn (1-2), St. Francis (1-0) and Niagara (1-0) – it will face in the Rebel Spring Games.

The Skyhawks enter the week-long tournament, their fourth of the season, with a 7-7 won-loss record.

The Skyhawks have played in the Jimmy John’s Southeastern Louisiana Lions Classic, the Kennesaw State Classic and the Red and Blue Classic at Ole Miss.

Freshman Deven Wilson leads the team with a .357 batting average, while sophomore Kenzi Tate is hitting .351 and senior Leah Taylor has a .333 batting average. Sophomore Lauren “G” Smith is leading the team with five home runs and 14 RBI.

In the circle, Tate sports a 5-1 won-loss record, while freshman Autumn Glenn has a 3.23 Earned Run Average. Glenn has only pitched 8.2 innings. Sophomore left-hander Casey Vincent has pitched 35.1 innings and sports a 3.37 ERA.
