MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team didn’t show any signs of missing head coach John Luthi Friday night.
In fact, it was business as usual as the men’s team won the team title at the Cossatot Community College rodeo in Texarkana, Ark. The men’s team piled up 740 points to claim its sixth Ozark Region rodeo of the year. UT Martin finished second at the Troy rodeo.
Luthi returned to Martin Friday to watch his daughter’s final high school basketball game. “I have never missed a rodeo, but I wanted to be at Katelyn’s final home game,” Luthi said.
Missouri Valley College was second with 520 points and East Mississippi Community College was third with 450 points.
The UT Martin women finished second in the team points with 200, while Troy won the rodeo with 475 points.
“Both teams took charge and were able to take care of business,” Luthi said. “Coach (Nelson) Davis was with the teams Friday and they were in good hands.”
Luthi made it back to Cossatot for the championship finals Saturday night. He saw John Alley win the average in the steer wrestling and Alley and Clark Adcock win the average in the team roping.
Tyler Waltz was first in the bareback riding first go and finished second in the short go and the average.
Lane Mitchell was fifth in the calf roping first go, fifth in the short go and fourth in the average.
Allen Foster split in the steer wrestling fifth and sixth go, while Will Lummus was fourth in the first go, second in the short go and third in the average.
Although Scott Steely did not score any points for UT Martin he made it back to the short go. “This is a big step for Scott,” Luthi said.
Steely never rode a horse before coming to college a year ago.
Alley also won the first go and the short go in the steer wrestling.
Ben Walker and Zach Mabrey (Troy) were third in the team roping first go and sixth in the average. Clay and Lane Mitchell were fourth in the team roping first go, second in the short go and second in the average.
Alley and Adcock also won the first go and the short go in the team roping.
On the women’s side, four UT Martin cowgirls scored points in the barrel racing. Dacia Horne was third in the barrel racing third go. Lauren Wagner was fifth in the barrel racing short go and fifth in the average.
Mary Francis Gorsuch was fifth in the barrel racing first go, third in the short go and third in the average, while Nealy Dalton won the first go, and was second in the short go and average.
“We made some mistakes, but we also did a lot of real good things,” Luthi said.
