MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team banged out 20 hits, two thunderous home runs and stole six bases on the second and third day of the Red and Blue Classic at Ole Miss Saturday and Sunday.
However, the offensive production was not enough as the Skyhawks suffered setbacks to McNeese State and Ole Miss Saturday afternoon and Drake Sunday morning.
The Skyhawks piled up seven hits and scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning against McNeese State, but it was not enough. McNeese State claimed a 7-2 victory.
The UT Martin offense struck early and often against host Ole Miss. The Skyhawks score two runs in each of the first two innings and jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Ole Miss escaped with the 9-8 victory in eight innings.
Kenzi Tate and Stephanie Nidiffer had two RBI each in the game. Nidiffer added a home run and senior Leah Taylor and junior Kayla Wade had two stolen bases each.
Sophomore Lauren “G” Smith belted her third home run, a three-run blast, of the Red and Blue Classic against Drake in the bottom of the third inning, but it was only one of three hits the Skyhawks could muster in the 7-3 loss.
Lindsey Fiegl and Deven Wilson accounted for the Skyhawks’ other two hits.
Wilson hit .500 in the five-game, three-day tournament at Ole Miss, while Smith batted .333 with four hits, three of which were home runs. She also had eight RBI.
The Skyhawks stole 10 bases in the tournament. Taylor was 4-for-4, while Wade was 5-for-5 on the base paths.
The Skyhawks went 2-3 in the Red and Blue Classic and are now 7-6 overall.
