OXFORD, Miss. – Senior first baseman Wade Collins reached base three times today at No. 8 Ole Miss, but it wasn’t enough as The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team dropped a 15-2 decision to the Rebels at Swayze Field.

Collins recorded his second multi-hit game of the young season tonight, going 2-for-3 to go along with a walk and RBI. Freshman Kenny King went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while fellow freshman Wes Piersall also scored a run today in his first career start for the Skyhawks (0-5).

The UT Martin pitching staff only issued one free pass today, while a trio of Skyhawk relievers conceded just three earned runs over six innings of work. Chris Ross allowed only one earned run in two innings, while Cody Miller (three frames, two earned runs) and Nick Wilson (one scoreless inning) each had successful season debuts. Starter Carter Smith was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs in two innings.

Ole Miss (4-0) started the game with two runs in each of the first two innings, then followed with a seven-run third inning. Ross then retired the side on just six pitches in a perfect fourth inning.

The Rebels added two runs in the bottom of the fifth but UT Martin fought back with two runs of its own in the top-half of the sixth. Piersall drew a leadoff walk on four pitches, then stole second. King then laced a two-out double to left field, plating Piersall to get the Skyhawks on the scoreboard. Collins then singled to right field, pushing across another run for UT Martin when King crossed home plate.

Miller threw only nine pitches in a scoreless sixth, capped off by an outfield assist by Grant Glasser.

Ole Miss tacked on two more unearned runs in the seventh before Wilson put up a scoreless eighth.

The Skyhawks begin a seven-game homestand this weekend, when they host IPFW at Skyhawk Field on Feb. 22-24.
