BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team has been picked to finish sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference golf tournament this season, while Jacksonville State University has been picked as the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference favorite in a vote of league head coaches released Wednesday.

Jacksonville State received eight of the 11 first-place votes to finish with the most points (95). That was four points ahead of second-place Austin Peay who received the other three first-place votes (91 points); the Governors finished one shot behind JSU at the OVC Championship last season. Murray State was picked third (81) and followed by Eastern Kentucky (66), Belmont (65), UT Martin (62), Tennessee Tech (46), SIUE (40), Tennessee State (24), Morehead State (18) and Eastern Illinois (17).

A season ago Jacksonville State claimed its fourth OVC golf championship (2004, 2007, 2011, 2012) topping Austin Peay by a stroke, the sixth time the OVC Championship was decided by a single stroke. It marked the first time an OVC men’s team had repeated as champions since APSU won three-straight titles from 2001-03.

During the fall season JSU played a tough schedule, placing in the top five in four of its five events (the team was 7th out of 15 squads in the other event). Sophomore Tomasz Anderson was named OVC Golfer of the Week four times during the fall. Austin Peay claimed five top five finishes during the fall campaign including winning team championships at the Bearcat Invitational and APSU Intercollegiate. Defending OVC medalist Anthony Bradley had a 72.9 stroke average in five events, including winning the Bearcat Invitational.

Murray State, who was third at the OVC Championship last season, had the top team average during the fall (289.4), as senior Patrick Newcomb’s 71.0 stroke average topped all OVC golfers.

For the fourth year in a row the OVC Championship will be held at the GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn. The championship is set for April 25-27. This year marks the first with Belmont as a member of the OVC and first that SIUE is postseason eligible.
