MARTIN, Tenn. – Redshirt sophomore Terence Smith poured in a game-high 26 points this evening for The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team, but Southeast Missouri claimed a 96-74 win over the Skyhawks in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.

Smith – whose 26 points eclipsed his career-high of 20 points set twice during his freshman season – also set career-bests in field goals made (nine) and attempted (16) tonight, while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. It was the eighth double-digit scoring game of the season for the Russellville, Ala. native, who missed all of last season and 10 games this season because of injury.

“Terence is starting to get back to full strength and we saw what he is capable of doing tonight,” UT Martin head coach Jason James said.

Mike Liabo added 15 points for the Skyhawks (7-18, 4-9 Ohio Valley Conference), while Myles Taylor just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman BJ McLaughlin set a new career-high with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 11 minutes off the bench to round out the double-figure scorers for UT Martin, who also received eight points and eight rebounds out of the team’s lone senior Jeremy Washington on Senior Day.

Marland Smith (22 points), Nick Niemczyk (21) and Lucas Nutt (20) led the Redhawks, who hit 10-of-16 three-point attempts in the first half. Nino Johnson compiled game-highs of 11 rebounds and five blocks for Southeast Missouri (14-13, 6-7 OVC).

Four Redhawk three-pointers in the game’s opening 3:40 ignited an early 10-point lead for Southeast Missouri (16-6) at the 14:32 mark. UT Martin then went on an 11-2 run, capped off with a Terence Smith trifecta midway through the first half to get the Skyhawks within one point at 18-17.

A layup by Taylor at the 9:16 mark kept UT Martin within one possession at 22-19 but Southeast Missouri soon scored 15 unanswered points to go on top 37-19 with five minutes to play in the first half.

A Liabo free throw with 1:42 sliced the Skyhawk deficit to 15 before Southeast Missouri took a 50-30 lead into the halftime break.

Terence Smith’s 11 points led UT Martin at the half, while Marland Smith scored 18 points in the first 20 minutes to pace Southeast Missouri.

The Redhawks extended their lead out to 27 points in the early stages of the second half but UT Martin kept clawing back. Liabo sank a trio of three-pointers in a span of 1:31 – including a four-point play with 14:21 remaining – to help the Skyhawks get back in the game.

Minutes later, Terence Smith scored seven points during a 9-2 UT Martin run that made the score 74-63 with 7:52 to play. The Skyhawks had the chance to get within single-digits with under five minutes left but Southeast Missouri closed out the game on an 11-2 run.

UT Martin returns to action this Thursday, Feb. 21 when it travels to OVC rival Tennessee Tech. Tip-off time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
