WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TO CLOSE OUT HOMESTAND AGAINST SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will close out its three-game homestand at 4 p.m., Saturday, when they host Southeast Missouri State in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.

The Skyhawks look to end the homestand on a positive note after this past Saturday’s 66-63 setback to SIU Edwardsville.

Juniors Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome led the Skyhawk scorers with 18 and 15 points respectively against SIU Edwardsville. Freshman Katie Schubert hit a trio of 3-pointers and finished the game with 11 points.

UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillian said his team is faced with the lack of depth. Injuries have sidelined Cortrice Golden and junior Megan White for the rest of the season.

“Hopefully we still have time to figure out the pieces to this puzzle and make a run,” McMillian said.

After overcoming an 8-0 SIU Edwardsville lead, the Skyhawks claimed a 16-14 advantage when Butler drained a 3-pointer with 9:29 to play in the first half. The Skyhawks led three other times by two points, and even stretched their lead to five points, 23-18, with 5:21 to play.

In the second half the Skyhawks led 45-33 with 14:24 to play. Butler hit another 3-pointer. However,  SIU Edwardsville’s Berry made it a one-point game, 52-51, when she canned a free throw with 7:15 to play. With 6:37, Berry made a layup and SIUE led 53-52 and never looked back.

With :54 to play in the game, Butler made it a two-point contest, 65-63, but that is as close as the Skyhawks could get.

Southeast Missouri State enters the game after a 67-62 victory over SIU Edwardsville Monday. Kara Wright scored 20 points for the third time in six games to lead Southeast Missouri State.

Southeast shot 40.6 percent from the field and hit 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) three-pointers while going 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) at the line. Southeast forced 18 SIUE turnovers and committed only nine miscues.

Wright made 7-of-15 field goal attempts and went 3-of-5 from three-point range to lead Southeast Missouri State. Twelve of her points came in the second half.

“At this point in the season, I feel like we are playing our best basketball,” Southeast

Missouri State second-year head coach Ty Margenthaler said. “I like mentally where our team is.”

Earlier this season, UT Martin claimed an 82-71 victory over Southeast Missouri State. UT Martin sports a 11-14 overall record and a 6-5 OVC worksheet, while Southeast Missouri State is 4-8 in the league and 10-15 overall.
