February 8, 2013
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin will host SIU Edwardsville at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center, in the second of a three-game homestand.
The Skyhawks are 8-4 overall at home and 4-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. With Monday night’s victory over Eastern Kentucky, the Skyhawks will look at putting together their third win streak of the season.
“We’re going to score enough points to give us a chance,” UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. “Every game is going to hard, it’s not going to pretty, it’s just what this team has become.”
The Skyhawks scored 75 points in the victory over Eastern Kentucky. Junior guards Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler scored 27 and 24 points respectively. Senior Rickiesha Bryant scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
Bryant’s effort marks the 11th time in the past 12 games, she has scored in double figures. She only scored in double figures one time last season.
The Skyhawks enter the game as 29th best team in the nation in scoring offense (72.0 ppg), while Butler and Newsome are first and second in the OVC in scoring and ninth and 14th in the nation in scoring.
SIU Edwardsville enters the game with a 5-5 OVC slate and an 11-11 overall record. The team is led by senior Raven Berry and sophomore Tierny Austin. Berry averaged 13.8 ppg and 9.1 rpg, while Austin averages 11.8 ppg and 6.3 rpg.
Earlier this season SIU Edwardsville defeated the Skyhawks 67-66 in overtime to tie the series at 2-2 since the Cougars joined the conference.
