WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM CLOSES OUT ROAD TRIP AT EASTERN ILLINOIS

MARTIN, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will wrap up its three-game Ohio Valley Conference road swing with a victory as it plays at Eastern Illinois University Monday night in Charleston. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. from Lantz Arena.

The Skyhawks (10-12) are coming off a tough loss at SIU Edwardsville Saturday afternoon, dropping a 67-66 overtime decision. UT Martin led by nine points in the first half and held a one-point advantage at the halftime break.

Rickiesha Bryant sank a free throw with 13 seconds left in the second half to force overtime, but SIU Edwardsville was able to outscore the Skyhawks 9-8 in the extra frame.

Jasmine Newsome led UT Martin with 17 points, adding a career-best seven steals to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Junior Heather Butler drained four 3-pointers to extend her streak of 68 games with a 3-pointer made. She could tie the NCAA record (69 straight games with a 3-pointer) in Monday night’s game against Eastern Illinois.

Freshman Sydney Vanlandingham (10 points at SIU Edwardsville) reached double-figures for the fourth time in her young career.

Eastern Illinois (12-8, 6-2 OVC) comes into the matchup off the wings of a strong defensive effort, holding Southeast Missouri to just 37.8 percent shooting in an 82-62 win at home Saturday.

Seniors Mariah King and Ta’Kenya Nixon combined to score 42 points. Nixon paced the Panther offense with a game-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting. The Michigan City, Ind., native also dished out a game-high eight assists and added five rebounds and three steals.
