The University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team will continue its three game OVC road swing as they travel to SIU Edwardsville Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. from the Vadalabene Center.

The Skyhawks (10-11) are riding the momentum of a season-long three game win streak and a convincing 81-63 win over OVC rival Tennessee Tech on Monday to move UT Martin in a tie atop the OVC standings at 5-2.

Jasmine Newsome led five Skyhawks in double figures with 19 points, while Heather Butler added 16 points and six assists. Senior Rickiesha Bryant added her eighth straight game with double digits, scoring 13 points and six rebounds. Freshmen Katie Schubert and Sydney Vanlandingham added 14 and 12 points respectively, combining for 8-of-10 from behind the arc.

“When we get 19 from (Jasmine) Newsome, 16 from (Heather) Butler, 14 from Katie Schubert, 13 from Rickiesha (Bryant) and 12 from (Sydney) Vanlandingham,

I will take it every night and not worry about a thing,” UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. “When we help Butler and Newsome, we are a pretty good basketball team.”

UT Martin built a 22-point lead with 12:32 to play in the game and never looked back. The Skyhawks shot 56.4 percent from the field and hit 12-of-24 from 3-point range. The Skyhawks also forced 18 turnovers on the night and grabbed 12 steals as their 1-3-1 defense stymied the Golden Eagles. Newsome led the team with five steals.

UT Martin jumped out to a 5-0 run in the first half and never looked back, hitting seven 3-pointers, with Vanlandingham knocking down all four of her attempts.

“When you make shots like we did we are a pretty good team,” McMillan said.

SIU Edwardsville (9-10, 3-4 OVC) comes into the matchup off the wings of a strong defensive effort holding Austin Peay to just 26 percent shooting in the 54-49 win on the road. The Cougars are led by senior forward Raven Berry. Berry leads the team with 13.1 pgg and 9.1 rpg including chipping in 13 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season in the win over the Lady Govs. Sophomore Tierny Austin averages 11.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg adding 13 points and nine rebounds the last time out.
