MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FALLS 90-53 AT BELMONT
January 12, 2013
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Myles Taylor and Justin Childs each posted double-digit scoring nights, but The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball team lost 90-53 to Belmont at the Curb Event Center.
Taylor led the team in scoring for the 10th time this season, compiling 15 points in addition to a game-high eight rebounds for the Skyhawks. Childs added 14 points and seven rebounds while Jeremy Washington scored eight points for UT Martin (4-14, 1-5 Ohio Valley Conference), who won the battle on the glass (40-31) and canned 90 percent of its free throw attempts (18-for-20) this evening.
Belmont (13-4, 4-0 OVC) was keyed by Ian Clark’s 32 points, while Craig Bradshaw added 11 points off the bench for the Bruins, who are in their first season in the OVC after winning five Atlantic Sun Conference titles over the last seven years.
“We played ok early, it just took us a second to get our bearings and against good teams, you can’t do that,” UT Martin head coach Jason James said. “There’s good basketball in us – we have showed it in flashes. But consistency is the name of the game. We have to be more steady as a basketball team.”
The Skyhawks struck first, as Childs gave UT Martin a 2-0 lead after a drive to the bucket at the 18:44 mark. Belmont then scored 11 unanswered points until the Skyhawks unreeled a 7-2 run, capped off by back-to-back baskets by Taylor.
A three-pointer off a curl by Mike Liabo at the 9:04 mark trimmed UT Martin’s deficit to five (17-12). Four straight points by Jeremy Washington kept the Skyhawks within striking distance before a 12-0 Belmont run over a span of 2:25 resulted in a 36-16 score with just under three minutes left before the halftime break.
BJ McLaughlin tallied four straight points for the Skyhawks towards the end of the first half but Belmont was able to take a 46-22 lead at the half.
Washington’s six points led UT Martin in the first half, while Clark’s 24 points paced Belmont.
Childs and Washington recorded quick baskets in the early going of the second half, but the Bruins followed with a 14-0 run to go ahead by a 62-26 margin at the 13:49 mark.
Taylor was responsible for seven straight Skyhawk points down the stretch of the second half, while Childs closed the game out with six consecutive points for UT Martin.
The Skyhawks will return to the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center next Saturday, Jan. 19, when they take on OVC rival Morehead State. The game – the nightcap of a women’s and men’s doubleheader – will begin at 6 p.m.
